Dharmeswarar Temple, Manimangalam
Dharmeshwar Temple, Manimangalam. This Temple is situated at a distance of 10 km from TAMBARAM on the western side. This is a Chola period temple more than 1000 years old. Manimangalam was one of the Chaturvedhi Mangalam in Chola Era wherein Lands and temples were given to Vedic scholars by the kings for performing rituals for the well being of the country. Manimangalam is the place where the Pallavas led by Mahendra Varman and his son Narasimha Varman defeated the forces of Pulikesin II in 7th century. The place is mentioned in "Siva kamiyin Sabatham" by Kalki.
The Sannadhi of Dharmeshwar is facing East under a Gajaprashta Vimanam. Only 'Oru Kala ' Pooja is performed in the temple and the Gurukkal who lives nearby has to be called for Deeparadhana. The Moolavar Sannidhi is cool and divine. On the outer walls of Sannidhi there are Koshta idols of Vinayaka, Dakshinamoorthi, Vishnu, Durgai like any other siva temple. There is a Bali Peetam and Nandi in outer Prakaram. The Goddess Vedambigai is having separate Sannidhi facing south. There is a small pond/tank and Maha Sivarathri is celebrated with pomp as per local info. There is chola period inscriptions on the Eastern wall outside main sannidhi which mention about donation of land in the 18th year of Sri Raja raja Deva for lighting lamps in the temple. A very nice temple one should visit to know History and Temple heritage.
