Thiruvalidayam Temple, Padi

          Thiruvalidayam Temple, Padi

The above Chola era  Thevara Padal Petra sthalam is situated in Padi half a km away from the main road leading to Avadi opposite TVS group of Factories. The temple  deity has been sung by Thirugna Sambandar the 7th century Saivite saint and is one of the 32 Thondai Mandala Padal Petra Sthalam. The temple has also been visited by Arunagirinathar, Vallalar and Pamban Swamigal. The temple is a Guru parihara sthalam and a separate shrine is there on the outer prakaram.

The temple is entered through a three tiered Raja Gopuram on the eastern side. The place has been called “ Thiruvalidayam” right from Chola period as mentioned in the inscriptions on outer walls of the sanctum. It is seen that only the sanctum seems to belong to 12th century Chola era as seen from the inscriptions and the Gaja prashta Vimanam. The main deity is swayambu lingam and is called Thiruvalleswarar. Legend says that Bharadwaj muni worshipped the Lord here in the form of Black Sparrow (Valiyan)and got the blessings of the God and hence the name Validayam.  The Amman facing south is called Jagathambigai  showing her benevolent grace on the devotees. On the outer walls of the main sanctum we have Koshta deivams of Ganesh, Dakshinamurthy, Vishnu, Brahma and Durgai. Separate shrines are there for Somaskandar, Murugan and Kalabairavar on the inner prakaram. A Goshala is also maintained by the Temple.

This temple is called Gurusthalam as this is one of the three temples worshipped by Lord Brahaspathi the other two being Tiruchendur and Thitai.  We have the Navagraha Sannidhi on the outer prakaram along with Guru shrine.  Devotees offer yellow cloth and Garland of Konda Kadalai to Guru to earn his blessings. The devotees visiting this temple are indeed blessed.
