RAMANATHASWAMI TEMPLE, RAMESWARAM

Rameswaram Ramanathaswami Temple.  Had the opportunity to visit the temple on Tamil Varuda Pirappu 14/4/2017. The  Darsham was made early morning with  Spatika Linga abhishekam and Rudrabhishekam. This is a centuries old temple and extensively  constructed during the period of Pandyan kings, Ceylon king Parakramabahu and Sethupathi Rajas. The legend says that Rama on his return from Lanka wanted to  worship Siva to remove the  Brahmahathi Dosham. He requested Hanuman to  bring a Linga for  his worship. Since it took some time for Hanuman  Sita made a Linga of sand for  worship  which is  the main Linga Ramanathaswami. When Hanuman  came back after some time with the Linga he was annoyed  and Rama pacified him by having that Linga also which is the  Linga of Viswanathar on the  left side of the main sanctum. Even now preference is given to  Viswanathar in worship.  The  main tower on the  East is 126 feet height and  was constructed by Devakottai Zamindar in 1900s. There are 22 punya  theerthams in  which the  devoties take bath and the sea is called  Agni Theertham. The world  famous  3rd corridor was constructed in 1750s by the Sethupathi Rajas is 690 feet by 435 feet. The  Spatika  Linga was installed by Adi  Shankara. The  railway bridge connecting the  Rameswaram Island was constructed in 1914 before which the only communication to the Island was by small  Ships or Boats.
